De Ceuvel is a planned workplace for creative and social enterprises next to the van Hasselt canal on the IJ in Amsterdam North. The land was leased for 10 years from the City of Amsterdam after a group of initiators won a tender to turn the site into a regenerative urban oasis. The aim is to set an example for closing nutrient cycles, cleaning the soil in a natural way and experimenting with new technologies. And all while serving as a creative office area.
They turned the site into a regenerative urban oasis
What is the result of the project? The former industrial site has been transformed into the most unique and sustainable urban developments in Europe. The site features retrofitted houseboats where you can sleep in placed around a wooden walkway and surrounded by a landscape of soil-cleaning plants. The city can take advantage of this by having clear examples of applied sustainability, but also offering cheap workplaces for creative entrepreneurs. When visiting De Ceuvel I felt like a child. So much to see, do and experience. A must go!
