There are almost 360 bee species in the Netherlands. But more than half of these are endangered. Bees are important for pollination. 80% of our edible crops and almost 90% of our wild plants are pollinated by bees and other insects. In 2021, more than 10.000 people took part in the National Bee Count. In total, despite the cold spring, they counted more than 190.000 bees and hover flies. The high number of counters again this year is good news for the wild bee. Everyone is becoming more and more aware of the importance of wild bees and wants to commit to it. The annual garden count contribute to research into wild bees in the Netherlands. It gives new insights into, for example, the differences between regions, or the urban environment and the countryside.
